As I was gathering information for my business, I was suprised by the number of major Salt categories there are. After my analysis I decided to begin with two categories of Salt; Sea Salt and Himalayan salt. Sea Salt created challenges as well: read Sea Salt.
Here is what I found, and want to share with you, about Salt categories:
Table – Iodized: Table salt is the most processed edible Salt available in the marketplace. It is created by heating natural salt to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, which destroys most beneficial compounds. Once the unprocessed salt is heated up to this temperature, it starts to lose the majority of the eighty important elements that are naturally occurring. Then it is fortified with iodine, table salt is also bleached and devoid of trace elements.
There are also other synthetic chemicals added to aid in flavor and anti-caking agents; they may include everything from manufactured forms of sodium solo-co-aluminate, iodide, sodium bicarbonate, fluoride, potassium iodide and aluminium derivatives.
Kosher Salt: Kosher salt is harvested and processed much like regular table salt. Kosher salt is harvested and processed much like regular table salt, but it’s raked into larger, thicker crystals. In addition, no additives like iodine are added to kosher salt.
Rock Salt: Rock salt I s usually mined salt that is coarser and less refined than table salt. It is thought to have a few remaining trace minerals, though it may also contain traces of impurities like gypsum, thicker crystals. In addition, no additives like iodine are added to kosher salt.
Sea Salt: Everyone is familiar with sea salt. This salt comes from the ocean and undergoes an evaporation process to separate the salt from the water. Sea salt contains a small amount of natural iodine, however, much less than iodized salt. It is much less refined than table salt and comes in many coarse varieties.
Himalayan Pink Salt: The gem of the Himalayan Mountains, pink salt, is said to be the purest salt on earth. As the lava and mountain protected salt, it has been untouched for millions of years and not exposed to the modern day pollution. Himalayan salt happens to be 85% sodium chloride, and the remainder contains over 80+ minerals. Many experts recommend pink salt as one of the healthiest salts you can consume. Its popularity has made it more affordable than other more exotic salts on the market.
Grey Sea Salt – Celtic Sea Salt: Colored by the clay from where it’s harvested, grey salt is often called Celtic Sea Salt. It is hand-raked in Brittany, France, where the natural clay and sand create moist, mineral-rich crystals. This salt generally retains its moistness. It is believed that Grey salt can help to restore electrolyte balance, it has alkalizing properties and can prevent muscle cramps, much like pink salt. However, this salt is more expensive, because of the labor intensive process of hand-raking.
Fleur de Sel: Fleury de sel is French for “flower of the salt”. It is intended to be used as a finishing salt. It is hand-harvested along the French coastline in the same pools as grey salt.For every 40 kilograms of grey salt produced, only 1 1/2 kilograms of delicate fleur de sel is harvested. This light and flaky salt is highly prized and generally used for finishing foods. In terms of health, it is mineral-rich sea salt with a delicate flavor and texture. It is one of the most expensive Salts in the world
Black Lava Sea Salt: From Hawaii, black lava salt is unrefined and volcanic. These salts are harvested from Blue Hawaiian Pacific waters using traditional methods of solar evaporation, allowing the salt crystals to form with the much desired trace minerals intact. The salt obtains its natural and dramatic coloring from activated coconut shell charcoal which is infused with the salt for its numerous health benefits including antioxidant properties and enhanced digestive health.
Red Hawaiian Sea Salt: Hawaii Sea Salt is 100%, harvested from the Hawaiian Waters that surround the Islands of Hawaii. Red Hawaiian Sea Salt is pure white crystals and contains no additives whatsoever. Hawaiian Coarse Table Salt has a deep pink color which comes from Alaea clay that is added during the harvesting process. This salt is composed of over 80 minerals and historically has been used for ceremonial purposes such as blessing and purifying sea-going boats.
Persian Blue Salt: This unique salt harvested from an ancient salt lake in Iran is extremely mineral rich and slightly sweet. Persian blue salt is a coarse salt studded with sapphire-colored rock crystals. It is extracted from mines of pure, unpolluted crystallized sea salt which have formed over 260 million years – meaning that that it’s a finishing salt which oozes history and sophistication.
